Welcome to Ghana
In addition to being known for its lush forests, diverse animal life, and miles of sandy beaches along a picturesque coast, Ghana is also celebrated for its rich history and as a fascinating repository of cultural heritage.
The meeting will take place at the Accra Marriott Hotel. Located within Airport City, a vibrant new urban community, the venue is conveniently situated close to the Kotoka International Airport and several hotels.
Travel documents and visas: A passport and a visa are required. All visitors to Ghana must possess valid passports issued by their home governments, except nationals of any member country of the ECOWAS, who may produce travel certificates in lieu of passports. All non-ECOWAS citizens require visas at a fee before entry.
Ghana Missions and Embassies are authorized to issue visas or entry permits to all classes of visitors destined for Ghana.
If Ghana does not have a diplomatic representation in your country, kindly notify Mr Lawrence Ayagiba, Deputy Auditor-General in charge of the Local Organising Team (Lawrence.ayagiba@audit.gov.gh). This would enable SAI GHANA to confer with the Ghana Immigration Service to ensure that a visa is issued to you upon your arrival at the KOTOKA International Airport, Accra, Ghana.
This visa on arrival is, however, issued upon the payment of a sum of $150(USD) by the applicant to the processing officer at the Airport.
The Republic of Ghana is a country located along the Gulf of Guinea in the sub-region of West Africa. It spans a land mass of 238,535 km2 (92,099 square miles). Accra
Accra is the capital of Ghana, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. Some highlights are:
- A National Park was erected in memory of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
- Makola Market, the city’s vast, colourful marketplace
- Labadi Pleasure Beach and Laboma Beach Resort have popular seafront spots that offer golden sand and high-energy nightlife.
Places to visit in Accra
Accra Mall: This is a vibrant high-end shopping centre, with a cinema, fashion shops, and restaurants. Located at Plot C11, Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, Spintex Rd, Accra.
A & C Mall: In the heart of East Legon. It has convenient stores, food places, a supermarket, a gym with a swimming pool and an Irish pub as well. There is also a vegetarian restaurant called Mahorgany: https://www.facebook.com/mahorgany
Marina Mall also has some shops and eateries such as Akosombo Bar, Sweet Roses Chinese Restaurant, SOHO lounge and Lunar Bar for those who want to dance. It is strategically positioned in Airport City.
Spintex shopping area. Located on Spintex road, links Spintex to Airport City. The area hosts a number of shopping Malls such as the China Mall, Sneda Shopping centre, the Palace Hypermarket, and Orca Décor.
Oxford Street, Osu. One can have an on-street shopping experience here. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, a range of shops and roadside stalls and a nice local atmosphere. Compare it to NYC if you like the nightlife.
Arts Centre is one of the biggest markets for both clothing and artefacts. Here you can get both clothing of local designs and all kinds of artefacts.
The temperature in Accra during your stay will range from 25°c to 32°c. Humidity and showers are forecasted periodically.
Ghana’s official currency is the Cedi. Visitors could change foreign currency on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, Hotels and Shopping Malls.
Taxi services such as UBER, YANGO, DROPYN and TAXIFY work very well in Accra.
There are two types of power outlets used in Ghana, these are type G and D with the primary power supply being type G: Plug Type D - This power socket (also known as type D power outlet) can be identified by the three circular holes in a triangular pattern for live, neutral and ground. If none of your usual plugs is compatible, you should buy a universal travel adapter to be able to plug your electric devices.
Ghana is safe however individuals should always be alert. The security measures to be taken are no different from those which must be adhered to in all major cities:
Never leave the hotel at night without company; it is advisable to go out in groups of 2 or 3 persons but leave information at the hotel about your destination. You must be always in possession of your passport.
Do not leave handbags, suitcases, phones, cameras, laptops, and jewellery unattended in the conference rooms or the hotel lobby.
When you go out, do not display your personal belongings openly, especially at night.
